Description
Rolex GMT-Master (Ref. 16750) – The "Transitional" Model
The Reference 16750 (produced around 1980–1988) is considered the perfect link between vintage aesthetics and modern functionality. It replaced the legendary 1675 and introduced crucial technical innovations.
Technical Evolution: Caliber 3075
The most important innovation was the Caliber 3075. It introduced the Quickset function, which allows the Date to be set independently of the hour hand quickly. Additionally, the beat rate was increased to 28,800 A/h, improving accuracy and robustness.
Dial Variants
During the production period, there was a significant design change:
-
Matte Dials (until around 1984): These early versions have painted indices without metal surrounds and exude classic tool watch charm.
-
Glossy Dials (from around 1984): Later models received a glossy dial with indices set in White Gold, giving the look a more elegant and modern feel.
Case and Appearance
Despite the modern technology inside, the 16750 retained the characteristic Acrylic Glass. This provides the warm light refraction and typical vintage look that Sapphire Crystal models do not offer. The 40 mm case remained slim and was mostly delivered with the red-blue "Pepsi" bezel on Oyster or Jubilee bracelets. The water resistance was doubled to 100 meters for this reference.
