Description
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116505 – Year of Manufacture 2020
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona was introduced in 1963 and is named after the Daytona International Speedway in Florida. Rolex designed the model as a Chronograph for professional motorsport use and remains the official timekeeper of the 24-hour Daytona race to this day. Due to its fame – not least because of the Daytona Chronograph worn by Paul Newman in the 1960s, whose personal example was auctioned for a record price at Phillips in 2017 – the Daytona is one of the best-known sports Chronographs in watchmaking.
The Reference 116505 offered here was introduced in 2008 as a solid gold version in Rolex's in-house Everose Gold alloy; Everose was developed by Rolex in 2005 and replaced the previously common Rose Gold alloy by stabilizing the Copper and maintaining the Rose Gold finish evenly over the years. The 116505 belongs to the modern Cosmograph Daytona series, which was produced until the generational change to reference 126505 in 2023. This example is from the year of manufacture 2020.
Case
The case is made of Rose Gold and has a diameter of 40 mm. The screw-down crown and the screw-down Chronograph pushers for controlling the stopwatch function are Rolex designs that ensure the water resistance of the Oyster case. The dial is protected by a Sapphire Crystal. The integrated Rose Gold bracelet closes with a Double Folding Clasp (Oysterlock).
Dial
The dial is set with diamonds and shows the three subdials characteristic of the Daytona – they belong to the Chronograph function and record running seconds as well as stopped minutes and hours.
Movement and Functions
The Daytona is powered by a Rolex manufacture caliber with automatic winding. The main function is the Chronograph with stopwatch function, operated via the two screw-down pushers.
