Description
Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean „Big Blue“
The Perfection of Blue Ceramic
This edition is a technological milestone in Omega's history, as it is the brand's first watch to feature a case made entirely from a single block of blue ceramic (). The technical challenge lies in the thermal treatment: ceramic must be sintered at extremely high temperatures, where precise control of the blue pigments requires the highest engineering skill to ensure a uniform color depth.
Case Technology and Material Science
The 45.5 mm case made of zirconium oxide ceramic boasts a hardness six times greater than conventional stainless steel. This makes the watch nearly immune to scratches and chemical influences. A special highlight is the unidirectional rotating diver’s bezel: it combines blue ceramic with a Liquidmetal™ dive scale. In this process, an amorphous metal alloy is pressed into the ceramic recesses, permanently and seamlessly bonding with the material. The first 15 minutes of the scale are also injected with bright orange rubber directly into the ceramic surface.
For professional use in deep sea diving, the case is equipped with a screw-down helium escape valve at 10 o’clock. This protects the watch’s integrity during decompression phases in the saturation diving bell by allowing excess helium atoms to escape in a controlled manner.
The Manufacture Movement: Master Chronometer Caliber 8906
Inside works the state-of-the-art Caliber 8906, an automatic movement with Master Chronometer certification by the METAS institute. The movement is designed to withstand magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss—a resistance achieved through the use of silicon components (such as the Si14 balance spring) and anti-magnetic alloys.
The caliber features an integrated GMT function, which displays a second time zone on the inner 24-hour scale via a central orange hand. Thanks to the bidirectional winding rotor and the use of two sequentially coupled barrels, the watch offers a stable power reserve of 60 hours. The legendary Co-Axial escapement also drastically reduces mechanical friction, stabilizing timekeeping accuracy over years.
Dial and Functionality
The dial is also made of polished blue ceramic, recognizable by the subtle [ZrO2] engraving beneath the hand axis. The applied indices and hands are crafted from 18 karat White Gold and coated with Super-LumiNova. To optimize legibility underwater, the various indicators emit two colors: the minute hand and the luminous dot on the bezel glow Green, while all other indicators shine in a strong Blue.
The technical package is rounded off by a blue Rubber strap with orange contrast stitching, featuring a Folding Clasp made of matching blue ceramic. The watch is water-resistant up to a pressure of 60 bar (600 meters) and offers an unobstructed view of the movement decorated with Geneva stripe arabesques through the sapphire crystal case back.
