The Reference 5402 marks the birth of the luxury sports watch. Designed by Gérald Genta in 1972, it revolutionized the watch world and is today one of the most important collector’s pieces in history.
The Revolutionary Design
Known as the “Jumbo”, it owed its remarkable size of 39 mm for the time. The design broke all the rules: a stainless steel case at the price of a gold watch, the octagonal bezel with visible screws, and the integrated bracelet. The slim profile of only 7 mm made it extremely elegant despite its sporty character.
The Heart: Caliber 2121
Inside beats the legendary ultra-thin Caliber 2121. For a long time, it was the thinnest automatic movement in the world with central seconds and date display. Particularly characteristic is the rotor guided on a rail, which made the slim construction possible.
Collector’s Details
The 5402 is divided into different series (A, B, C, and D). Especially the A series (the first 2000 pieces) is highly sought after. It is recognized by the “AP” logo located above the 6 o’clock position, instead of at 12 o’clock as in later models. The dial with the fine “Petite Tapisserie” pattern is the hallmark of this reference.
