Rolex Cosmograph Daytona – Reference 116503 (2004)
Reference 116503 marks a significant milestone in the history of the legendary Daytona line. Introduced in 2004, it replaced its long-standing predecessor (Ref. 116523). In the yellow Rolesor version – the perfectly balanced combination of robust Oystersteel and 18-karat Yellow Gold – this watch combines the sporting spirit of motorsport with the unmistakable prestige of a gold watch.

The bezel upgrade: The most important update with the introduction of reference 116503 concerns the striking 18-karat Yellow Gold tachymeter bezel with Yellow Gold. Rolex modernized the scale design: the numerals were printed in a bolder font than on the predecessor model, and small triangles replaced the dots as markers. This gives the watch a significantly more modern, sportier and more prominent appearance.

Case & dial dynamics: Thanks to its slim profile and ergonomically curved lugs, the perfectly proportioned 40 mm case hugs the wrist like few other Chronograph models. In 2004, this model was available with several spectacular dials – the classic White, deep Black, and luxurious champagne dial are particularly sought after, each with the characteristic outlined subdials.

The legendary in-house Calibre 4130: Inside beats a mechanical masterpiece: the Chronograph movement 4130, developed entirely by Rolex. It eschews unnecessary complexity, uses a vertical clutch for the Chronograph seconds hand to start with absolute smoothness, and is equipped with a blue Parachrom hairspring. The power reserve is an impressive approx. 72 hours.

The Oyster bracelet: The Daytona is worn on the solid, three-piece-link Oyster bracelet. The polished center links in Yellow Gold continue the luxurious contrast with the satin-finished outer links in stainless steel. The Oysterlock safety folding clasp prevents accidental opening and features the practical Easylink extension system (5 mm) for hot days.
