Description
Heuer Montreal Vintage Chronograph
Black Aesthetics and Motorsport DNA
The Heuer Montreal was introduced in 1972 as an impressive, functional Chronograph. The version presented here with black PVD coating (Physical Vapour Deposition) was revolutionary for its time. This technique, originally from aerospace, gives the solid stainless steel case a deep matte, tactical finish that minimizes reflections and focuses fully on the instrument display.
Case and Dial Architecture
-
The Case: With its striking diameter of about 42 mm and the typical C-shape case design of the 70s, the watch appears massive and present. The PVD coating from this era gives the Montreal a unique patina, appreciated by collectors for its authentic "tool watch" character.
-
The Dial: The design is purely functional. Characteristic are the contrasting white or red accents on the black base. A special feature is the combined tachymeter and pulsometer scale on the outer edge, giving the watch its professional instrument look.
-
Layout: The horizontally arranged Chronograph totalizers at 3 and 9 o’clock provide perfect symmetry, while the Date is positioned at 6 o’clock.
The Mechanical Heart: Caliber 12
The Montreal is powered by the legendary Chronomatic Caliber 12 – a development of the world’s first automatic Chronograph movement (Caliber 11).
-
Construction: The movement is distinguished by the decentralized micro-rotor, invisibly installed under the Chronograph bridge.
-
Special Feature: Typical for this caliber is the crown on the left side at 9 o’clock. This was a deliberate design statement by Heuer to signal that the watch no longer needs manual winding thanks to the automatic winding. The Chronograph pushers are classically located on the right side.
Collector Value and Conclusion
The Heuer Montreal PVD is a rare find, as early coatings often wore off. A well-preserved example is a testament to Heuer’s bold experimental spirit in the 70s.
Conclusion: The “Black Montreal” is a must-have for lovers of historic motorsport Chronographs. It combines the legendary Caliber 12 with a design that remains modern and unconventional even after more than 50 years.
